Sykesville Baseball has been training and using kids to umpire the Sykesville Baseball Rec Program for over 30 years. To be eligible to umpire, kids must turn 12 by August 31 of the Spring Season. No baseball experience is necessary to be an umpire, but most of our umpires are current rec or travel baseball players from Carroll County and the surrounding area.
Umpires are paid for each game that they work and the rate paid is determined by their level and their position (plate or base) during the game. Umpires may also work games for service hours in lieu of pay.

For New Umpires
To become an umpire for the 2025 Spring/Fall Season, you must be 12 years old by August 31, 2025.
There are six (6) 2-hour classes with one (1) outdoor field mechanics class. Training classes for the 2025 Spring/Fall season will be on Sundays as follows:
Dates: Sunday, February 2nd - Sunday, March 9th, 2025
Times: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

*Remaining specific dates and locations for training will be provided by January 15th, 2025.
Makeup classes will be held the following Wednesday evenings after the Sunday classes at 6:00 p.m. at the Fairhaven Retirement Community (7200 3rd Ave, Sykesville, MD 21784). The Outdoor Training will be held on Sunday, March 16th at the Fairhaven Baseball Fields (600 Obrecht Rd., Sykesville, MD 21784).
For Returning Umpires
Training classes for the 2025 Spring/Fall season will be on Sundays as follows:
Dates: Sunday, February 2nd - Sunday, March 2nd, 2025
Times: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The first class on Sunday, February 2nd, 2025 is mandatory for all returning umpires.
